If you’re experiencing localized fat accumulation, liposuction performed by experienced plastic surgeons can address it and help you achieve the desired appearance.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which excess fat deposits in specific areas of the body are removed using specialized cannulas and aspirators. Also known as lipoplasty, this operation is not a weight-loss surgery. Liposuction aims to remove stubborn fat that does not respond to diet and exercise and reshape the body.
How is Liposuction Done?
Liposuction, or fat removal surgery, performed under general anesthesia, can be done using various methods. The operation typically lasts between 2-4 hours. For traditional liposuction, small incisions are made in the relevant areas. The fatty tissues are made fluid by injecting a solution, and then they are removed from the body using thin, long cannulas and an aspirator operated by the surgeon’s vibration. In Vaser liposuction, the fat tissues are broken down with ultrasonic sound waves. Then, excess fat is vacuumed out using special cannulas and an aspirator. In laser liposuction, fats are removed by breaking them down with low-wave laser beams. If fat transfer from one area of the body to another is needed, the body jet liposuction method may be preferred.
Which Areas Can Liposuction Be Applied to?
Liposuction is one of the most commonly preferred plastic surgery procedures for both men and women. Liposuction for localized slimming can be applied to areas with excess fat tissue. It is most commonly performed on areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, waist, back, and breasts, where excess fat accumulation is frequently observed. Additionally, the arms, armpits, knees, inner thighs, ankles, neck, chin, and cheeks are also areas where liposuction is performed. In males, liposuction is most commonly performed on the chest, abdomen, and waist.
Does Liposuction Make You Lose Weight?
Liposuction surgery is not a weight loss method. Liposuction performed for body contouring purposes removes excess fat tissue from specific areas, resulting in slimming. Approximately 5-8 liters of fat can be removed in a single operation. This can lead to immediate weight loss after the surgery. The amount of fat removed can vary depending on the patient’s age, weight, and height.
Who Can Have Liposuction?
Ideal candidates for liposuction surgery are those who are bothered by localized fat accumulation but do not have health problems such as excess weight or obesity. Those with chronic illnesses or immune system-related disorders must be thoroughly evaluated by a doctor. Having an elastic skin structure and muscle tissue and not smoking positively affects the results of the operation. In cases where excess skin is a problem in addition to excess fat accumulation, a tightening operation can also be performed along with liposuction, depending on the patient’s desires and needs. Other plastic surgery procedures such as tummy tuck and breast lift can be performed together with liposuction according to the patient’s desires and needs.
What is the Recovery Process After Liposuction Like?
The recovery process after liposuction varies from person to person. It is recommended to stay in the hospital for at least one night after the surgery. Patients can generally return to their normal lives within five to seven days after surgery. Intense physical activities such as exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for two to four weeks after the surgery. It is normal to experience pain, swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the body after the surgery. During the recommended period of healing, it is necessary to wear a special liposuction garment and follow the doctor’s other recommendations.
Are the Effects of Liposuction Permanent?
The effects of liposuction become noticeable once the compression garment is removed. The main effects of the operation can be seen approximately eight to ten weeks after the surgery. The localized slimming achieved with liposuction surgery is generally permanent. However, the patient should make lifestyle changes to maintain the effects of the operation; adopting healthy eating habits and regular exercise can help prevent gaining excess weight. If the patient pays attention to weight control after fat removal, the results of the operation can be long-lasting.
